Dr. Hundley

Dr. Hundley received a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge and a Doctor of Medicine Degree from LSU School of Medicine Shreveport where he was also awarded the Bick Award for Outstanding Student in Psychiatry. 

While in medical school he completed an externship at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas.  After finishing a rotating internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, California he completed a psychiatric residency at the Langley-Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute (LPNI) at the University of San Francisco Medical Center (USFMC) where he was awarded the Alexander Simon Award for excellence in teaching.  

He became board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1980.  He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and was granted Fellow status in 2005.  He is also a member of the Florida Psychiatric Society.  He began teaching a course, Introduction to Clinical Psychiatry, to medical students at USFMC during his residency and continued teaching the course for over ten years.  He was nominated as Best Small Group Teacher for the freshman class in 1991.

Dr. Hundley began his private practice of psychiatry in San Francisco while also teaching at LPNI as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry on the Consultation and Liaison Service in 1979.  He continued to teach as a member of the clinical faculty until 1991.  After focusing on his private practice seeing out-patients in his office and in-patients at St. Mary’s Hospital he was elected Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry in 1984.  He continued supervising psychiatric residents at both LPNI and St. Mary’s while maintaining a private practice.

Dr. Hundley joined the Mount Zion Psychotherapy Research Group, later renamed the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group (SFPRG), in the mid-1980s.  The group is involved in research in psychotherapy utilizing a theory of psychoanalytic therapy termed Control Mastery Theory.  The theory was developed by Joseph Weiss and centers on unconscious guilt, its consequences, and treatment based on the theory.  (A review of the theory and the activities of the SFPRG can be found at sfprg.org.)

In 1992 Dr. Hundley moved his family to Monroe, Louisiana and established a private practice.  While there he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at LSU School of Medicine Shreveport.  He became medical director of in-patient units at Morehouse General Hospital and Richardson Medical Center.

He accepted a position at the Watson Clinic in Lakeland, Florida in 1998 and moved to Winter Park, Florida in 2000 where he established a private practice of psychiatry focusing on outpatient psychiatry.

Dr. Hundley was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Florida State University 
Medical School in 2007.  He was chosen as a Top Doctor and as a Best Doctor (Psychiatry) by his peers (Orlando Magazine) multiple times since 2008.  He has given several presentations and colloquia on the Control Mastery Theory of psychotherapy in the Orlando area.
